National Post Interview March 2000

Starring in the Sylvester Stallone film D-Tox, the actor talks to Robert Ellsworth about profiteroles, racing cars and being naked.

Are you shy?
I can open up a bit mare to certain people than others. I can usually tell when I first meet someone whether I can open up or not. I can usually see the daggers coming.

Is it hard for you to trust people?
It depends on the vibes. I guess I'm intuitive. I am a very good judge of character, so I'm careful.

Which two adjectives would you use to describe yourself?
Whatever I say is going to make me sound like an egoist. If I'm honest, then I'll sound like I'm putting myself down as an angst-ridden actor. Concentrated and disciplined.

What's the hardest thing about shooting love scenes?
The most beautiful thing in the world is when your body gets overwhelmed by the sexual drive. Some of the things that happen during the real sex act are so out of the ordinary, like you might all of a sudden break out laughing. It's different when it's all choreographed and contrived. It's a bit like going into a sacred place with a tour guide. You have to make it come from a real place -- don't think you can manufacture chemistry between two people, so part of you has to go, "Wow."

So, you don't mind nude scenes?
I don't have a problem with being naked. A body is a body. I'm more insecure about recreating an emotion. I'm very secure with my body, so I don't mind nakedness.

What is your most precious possession?
Privacy is my most prized possession. If you're famous, you can't be an asshole. If I want to complain about the service at a restaurant, I can do it being Sean right now. If I was Brad Pitt, forget it. I'd be attacked for being pushy. Now, I can say, "Hey, you suck as a waiter," because I've been a waiter, and I know how to be a good one. You lose a lot of your rights when you're famous. I cherish my anonymity. I'm not sure what I'll have to deal with if fame hits. I can hide behind my characters, but I don't want to be dissected as me.

Are you an emotional or intellectual personality?
I try to come from the mind. It doesn't always work that way, though. Maybe I'm more of a combination. I try to keep them both in check I prefer analyzing a situation before acting it emotionally, but it doesn't always happen. Sometimes my heart speaks first.

Which food is orgasmic?
I'm a sensualist. I love satiating all of the senses. As for food, it depends on whether I'm into sweets or not. Pasta is great. For dessert, I love profiteroles -- with the right chocolate sauce so it's all fluffy. Yum.

Why do you race cars?
Danger is a common misperception. I'm so well protected in my car -- a roll cage, a harness -- the chances of getting hurt are less than on the freeway. I don't do it for the danger. I do it to outstrategize myself. Like a chess game.
